Wine Making

About the history of Wine Making.

The art of wine making goes back many centuries. Some historians estimate that the first wines were probably made six to seven thousand years ago! Egyptian frescos in tombs and pyramids already show pictures of workers active in wine making. Other ancient cultures also knew how to grow grapes and produce wine.

Among those cultures were the ancient Phoenicians, Indians, Romans and Greeks. Indians used medicinal wines in their old health system called “Ayurveda”. Many rich Romans and Greeks had their own vineyard and winery. It were the Greeks and later the Romans who spread wine making all over Europe and part of the Middle East and Northern Africa.

Former Roman Provinces became important wine making centers. Many of these regions are still major wine areas. Especially France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Greece have this very long viticultural roots. It were these French, Germans and others who exported the fine art of viticulture to America, (Southern) Africa, Asia and Australia
